Cameras

Flip Cameras are perfect for creating paper slide videos.

  • cheap.
  • easy for students to handle (especially when attached to a tripod).
  • simple to upload to a Mac or PC. You don't even have to use the software. Just drag the movie from the DCIM folder onto your desktop.
  • NO cords. Just pop out the connector on the camera and put it in a USB slot on your computer.
  • durable.
  • 2 important accessories: a cheap little tripod and a bag.
  • some flips use 2 AA batteries.

But how do you know which one to buy? Here's a little comparison of two flip cams.

Kodak zi8 (my favorite)

  • Li-Ion battery that is charged by plugging the camera into the laptop
  • Takes video and still photos
  • Zoom in and out
  • Length of recording depends on the size of the SD card

Flip Video Ultra HD

  • Uses 2 AA batteries
  • 30 minute recording or 60 minute recording

On a flip cam, just deleting the camera once you are finished with it, does NOT give you back the 60 minutes. While the flip cam is connected to your computer, select the icon for the camera, and empty the trash. This will give you back the 60 minutes.

Shoot 'n Share
This is not a flip but it looks like one. This camera is not only a camcorder but it's also a projector!!!! Yes, you read that right! Students can video an activity then project it on a wall to see how it looks instantly. This is a little more expensive than the flips.

Document CamerasMost document cameras have software that will record videos. If you have this already in your room try it. The nice thing about this is that no one has to hold a camera. You'll just work under your document camera. Connect the document camera to your computer and start the software that came with your camera. You'll need the laptop in front of the student who is narrating since that's where the sound will be recorded. Avermedia-Tech-300AF-3-2MP-Portable-Doc-Cam-0.jpgThis is the AverMedia 300AF+. Using the AverVision software, you'll be able to create videos.
